Purdys Character Designs

Larger seasons at Purdys Chocolatier would usually divide up their offerings in order to specifically target a different demographic than the usual: Valentine’s would have a few anti-Valentine’s products and Easter, Christmas, and Halloween would offer some gifts specifically for children. I was always happy to work in this stream, illustrating cute little guys is probably one of my favourite things to do and getting to make them for a project is always a joy.

The Frankenmallow and Yetimallow designs are actually rewraps of a marshmallow bar that is available year round, and a bar that isn’t overly popular. Both of these designs brought up the marshmallow bar into the top 10 sales ranking in its category, and many people would buy one of each of the designs and kids would get to pick out their favourite character, which generated a lot of interest around them. The designs themselves were a bit of a test with the printer who produces the wraps, they had stated that it was possible for them to print several variations of a design in a single roll of the wrap material. I created a yeti and frankenstein character respectively, each wearing different seasonal costumes, as well as the logos for each. They both share similar shape language and style. The nice thing about them is also that design updates for these could just require the creation of new costumes.

The Santa and Rudolph boxes are larger scale boxes with pop out cut outs, so the ears and beard wouldn’t be damaged in shipping, with the Rudolph being the updated iteration of the box. They have a flat illustration style loosely inspired by Japanese Kawaii. Both share their style in case of carry over of the Santa from the previous year where they would go out on the shelves in shop together.

Purdys releases 2 advent calendars per year, one for their general audience and the other targeted towards kids. The art style for this one was inspired by Animal Crossing, cel shaded graphics and paper cutouts and each of the elements were illustrated by myself.

More details about the design process for this piece are on the Purdys Chocolatier blog.
